This slow growing succulent shrub is prized for its vivid reddish pink to scarlet stems and small, fleshy green leaves marked with broad creamy white to pale yellow stripes through the centre. The central variegation is what separates Portulacaria afra ‘Medio-picta’ from the more common Portulacaria afra ‘Variegata’. In ‘Medio-picta’, the pale colouring runs through the middle of the leaf, while ‘Variegata’ carries its cream colouring mainly along the outer margins. Some ‘Medio-picta’ leaves can emerge with very little green at all, creating an especially bright, high contrast appearance.
