Virgo season brings the end of the long, warm summer days and the start of the crisp fall days, along with the changing colours of the leaves that we have all come to know and love here in North America. This earth sign is the sixth sign in the Zodiac, bringing with it the practicality and sharp attention to detail that are the driving factors for the personality of a Virgo. They are the type of people that you can depend on for support, always delivering the highest quality work and striving for perfection - they don’t miss anything! Wasted time, wasted space, and wasted energy are something they abhor so efficiency is number one in their books.

The conservativeness and tenacious work ethic of the Virgo point them to the Rubber Tree as their perfect plant pairing. Rubber Trees, also known as Ficus Elastica, are often mistaken for artificial plants due to their beautiful, glossy leaves. This confusion is most relatable to and appreciated by the Virgo, who is often misunderstood because of their high standards of themselves and others. Virgos are actually very caring individuals who feel a deep responsibility for others and do everything out of a sense of duty to them. Their drive makes it easy for them to keep up with the care and maintenance of a Rubber Plant because, while they are not exactly difficult to take care of, they do have a particular set of needs that must be followed.

The Ficus Elastica is native to the eastern parts of South Asia and southeast Asia but it can also be seen in other tropical areas such as Cuba or Florida in the US. The trick to these guys, similar to any other Ficus, is to find a bright spot for them, where they have a large view of the sky, a care routine that satisfies their needs and then staying true to that routine. As opposed to other Ficus’, Rubber Trees will be slightly more forgiving, not dropping all their leaves and freaking out at the first sign of change. However, they still require consistency in their temperature, light and watering needs but they will certainly reward you when provided with that.

Be careful not to water your plant too frequently as their thick, succulent-like leaves will store some water! Only when their soil is dry do you need to water your plant, watering it fully until the soil is evenly moist and there is water coming out of the drainage holes.

Rubber Trees tend to be a rather popular choice for a houseplant due to the exciting patterns that you can find on some varieties, such as the Rubber Plant Tineke or Rubber Ruby Red, which both have variegated patterns that will need higher light levels to support them. The dark foliage of the Melany or Burgundy Rubber Plant makes them the most suitable for medium to low-light spaces. All of the varieties will grow at an average speed, depending on how much light they are getting, but you can expect them all to go semi-dormant during the winter months, not losing any of their old leaves but not producing any new growth either.
