Pet Friendly Plants

Parlor Palm (Chamaedorea elegans) and Peperomia Obtusifolia (Baby Rubber Plant) are listed as non-toxic to cats and dogs by the ASPCA and labelled Pet Friendly in our care guides. Parlor Palm offers feathery foliage; Peperomia has rounded, fleshy leaves.

Check the exact botanical name in the ASPCA plant database before choosing: similar common names can refer to different species. A Baby Rubber Plant is different from a Ficus rubber plant. Keep even non-toxic plants away from pets that chew.

Parlor Palm is a useful starting point for a spot with less indirect daylight: its care guide rates it Medium - Low. It still needs light; a windowless room requires a suitable grow light.

For a brighter spot, compare Pilea Peperomioides, rated Medium, and Peperomia Obtusifolia, rated Medium - Bright. All three are labelled Pet Friendly. Match the plant to the light where it will actually sit, rather than treating every pet-friendly plant as a low-light plant.

They are not intended to be eaten. Even plants listed as non-toxic can cause stomach upset when chewed or swallowed. Use a stable planter and a position your pet cannot reach, and keep potting mix, fertilizers, and plant treatments inaccessible too.

If your pet becomes unwell after eating a plant, contact your veterinarian and keep the plant’s name or a photo available.

Peperomia Obtusifolia and Pilea Peperomioides are labelled When mostly dry in our care guides. Parlor Palm is labelled When half dry, so check its soil before letting it dry out completely.

These are soil conditions, not fixed schedules. Check the soil and follow the individual care guide; light, pot size, and the season all affect how quickly it dries.

For a tabletop or shelf, compare Baby Rubber Plant (Peperomia obtusifolia). For feathery foliage in a larger display, check the available sizes of Parlor Palm (Chamaedorea elegans). Both are listed as non-toxic to cats and dogs by the ASPCA; that does not make their leaves pet food. Choose the exact species rather than assuming every plant called a rubber plant or palm has the same pet guidance.
