Croton 'Petra,' aka Golden Petra or Codiaeum variegatum 'Petra,' is a stunning tropical plant with incredible variegation and veining on its foliage. From rich greens to vibrant yellows and oranges, this Croton will add the exact tropical vibe that you are looking for to your balcony or yard. With heat, humidity, and sunlight, the colours will stay strong all summer long.
They love as much heat and sun as possible. The best spot for them is where they can see the sun for the majority of the day. They can also handle indirect light but will lose most of their colouring.
They will do their best in bright light. A nice bright place outside would be on a sunny balcony, deck, or backyard; inside your home, it would do best in a sunny window sill. Remember that plants will grow based on how much light they receive.
They need to be watered when most of the soil is dry. Outside, how fast the soil dries will depend on how sunny and warm the days are, this can take up to 1 week. Indoors, that can take a little longer, but it will vary depending on the time of year, the environment, and lighting conditions. It's safer to underwater or check the soil before you water again, especially during the winter. Expect to water more often in the summer and less often in the winter.
They like a high humidity environment. Outdoors, this should happen naturally in the summer, but indoors, give them a mist daily or as often as possible. Alternatively, you can put them around a humidifier. Although they won't die if they don't receive enough humidity, their leaves may have some dry, crunchy, or yellow edges.
Fertilize your croton about once per week with a 3-1-2 liquid fertilizer. They are a slow grower, even in bright light and proper conditions, so if your plant is in a lower light space it will grow very slowly. Avoid pruning them too much when they are in the peak of their growing season.
The plant comes with a default nursery pot. The nursery pot is usually 0.5" - 1" smaller than stated to fit into the same size decorative pot. Washable Paper Planter Bags are sold separately.
As with all living things, no two plants are alike. There is some natural variation in size, shape, and characteristics. We make every effort to bring you a plant that as closely as possible matches the plant as it appears on our website, in the size you have chosen, and have a good potential to happily grow in your home.
