🪴this is the plant people buy specifically because they’re bad at plants.

ZZ plants store water in thick, potato-like rhizomes underground, so when you “forget” to water it, it’s not struggling, it’s just living off its own reserves.

it also evolved on forest floors in eastern africa, in the shade of taller plants, so low light isn’t a problem either.

if you’ve unalived every other plant you’ve owned, this is the one that might just thrive.

bright room doesn’t necessarily mean bright light. and this one thing explains a lot of struggling plants🌿

two plants in the same room can have completely different experiences depending on how close they are to the window (and to the sunlight). one is going to have enough energy to grow and thrive. the other might be quietly running low, growing slower, stretching toward light it can’t quite reach, producing smaller leaves.

this is important because light is how your plant makes energy. so less light me
this plant seems to be everywhere. and it goes by many names (pilea, coin plant, UFO plant, pancake plant, chinese money plant)

⭐️the reason why it’s everywhere? it clones itself constantly, no seeds required. one healthy pilea can realistically produce enough pups to gift to your entire friend group within a year.

so if someone’s ever randomly handed you one… now you know why.

episode 5: pilea peperomioides 🌱
🪴meet the plant that skipped soil entirely.

air plants get everything they need, water, nutrients, straight from the air through their leaves. no pot required.

which means you can stick one anywhere. shelf, driftwood, tiny glass orb, hanging by the window. just soak it every 1–2 weeks and it’s happy.

🤔you’ve seen this plant a thousand times.

in coffee shops, on Pinterest, in every condo lobby in the city. but do you actually know why it looks like that?

those splits and holes aren’t random. they’re one of nature’s smartest design decisions, engineered over years and years to survive brutal tropical winds and fight for sunlight deep in the rainforest canopy.

the monstera didn’t start as an aesthetic, instagram plant. it started as a survivor.

🪴Going up a pot size when you repot makes sense… until it doesn’t

The logic seems obvious: more space = more room to grow = faster growth. But for indoor plants, a pot that’s TOO big can actually cause root rot and slow everything down.

💡Here’s why it’s different from growing in the ground:

Outside, water spreads across an open system. oxygen moves freely through the soil. roots grow toward balance. It’s self-regulating.

Inside, a pot, that extra soil just holds moisture around the roots and traps it

When AC season hits, the air gets dry — and plants feel it with crispy, dry leaf edges. The natural instinct is to mist them. But here’s the thing: misting doesn’t actually increase humidity like you might think.

Humidity is water vapour in the air, not droplets on a leaf that evaporate in seconds. And for some plants, constantly wet foliage can actually cause fungal problems, bacterial spotting, and crown rot.

Getting started

you don’t need to become a plant person. you just need one plant🌿

getting a plant can feel like a whole commitment. thinking you need to learn about soil types, watering schedules, lighting types, and fertilizer ratios before you’re allowed to have one. so you just… don’t get a plant at all.

but here’s the thing. some plants are so easy that the correct care is actually leaving them alone. just water it when the soil is dry, and put it somewhere with some sunlight. that’s it.

start with one! come find y
good plant care is mostly just good observation. 🌿

not a perfect schedule. not memorizing every care tip. just paying attention and noticing what your plant looks like when it’s happy, and catching something early when it isn’t.

when we share a method or a tip, what we actually want you to take away isn’t the rule. it’s the thinking behind it. because once the why clicks, you stop second-guessing and start trusting what you’re seeing.

good observation leads to good instincts! and that’s what we’re here
if your plant keeps dying, it might not be neglect. it might be the opposite. 🌿

the number one mistake new plant parents make is over-parenting. checking on it every day, watering constantly, moving it around — it comes from love, but it stresses the plant out. most of the time, the kindest thing you can do is leave it alone.

the second mistake? picking a plant that’s a little out of your depth when you’re just starting out. an alocasia or a bonsai is stunning in the shop, but they’re a lil top advanced.
“I kill every plant I touch” is something we hear a lot. and we’re here to tell you, that’s not a you problem🌿

most of the time, people who “kill plants” either started with something too advanced, or got zero guidance and just had to guess. of course it didn’t work out.

the right plant, matched to your actual space and lifestyle, is actually kinda hard to kill.

no bright window? ZZ plant or snake plant.
forget to water? Pothos. it doesn’t care.

You may have kept one plant alive for years, and then killed one? That doesn’t make you a bad plant parent. 🌿

🤔 We hear this all the time. Someone has a thriving collection, brings home a new plant, and it dies. The assumption? Something must be wrong with the plant.

🪴But different plants have wildly different needs. What keeps one alive can be exactly the wrong thing for another. A snake plant loves to be ignored. A fiddle leaf fig wants consistent humidity, stable temps, and just the right amount of

if you’re unsure whether to water your plant today and here’s why💧

underwatering and overwatering both stress your plant, but they’re not equal. underwatering causes wilting and crispy leaves — dramatic, stressful to look at, but usually reversible. give it a good drink and most plants bounce right back.

🌿 overwatering is a different story. roots that sit in wet soil can’t breathe. they suffocate. they rot. and the damage happens underground, slowly, invisibly. by the time your plant’s leaves are yellow
Overwatering isn’t about giving your plant too much water at once. It’s about watering too often. 💧

Here’s the difference:

❌ Watering every day while the soil is still wet = overwatering. Roots can’t breathe, they rot 💀

✅ Waiting until the soil is partially dry (how dry? depends on what plant you have), then giving a deep thorough soak until water drains out the bottom = correct. That’s actually how most indoor plants want to be watered.

Let the soil dry out between waterings, and when you do water —
💧🌱Watering schedules can definitely be helpful… BUT, you use them loosely.

A routine is a great starting point — especially if life gets busy and you need a reminder. The mistake most people make is sticking to the same schedule all year.

Your plants slow down in fall and winter. They need water less often. If you’re still watering every week like it’s June, you’re probably overwatering without realising it.

Let the schedule be a guide, not a rule. Check the soil. Notice how your plant is doing. Adjust

🌱💧 Water deeply, not frequently!

Deep watering encourages roots to grow down where they can access moisture and nutrients, making your plants stronger and also more drought-resistant. Shallow watering can lead to surface roots that are more vulnerable.

Plus, overwatering is about constant saturation—so let the soil dry out between deep waterings if that’s something you’re worried about! 🌿✨

🤔💦What kind of WATER is BEST for your plants?

☀️🌺In their natural environments, plants are watered via rainwater as well as water from standing sources which are filled with nutrients to support thriving foliage.🌿

🌡️This water is most often warm (not hot), tepid, or lukewarm water as well, and warm water will absorb into the soil the best so avoid using cold water, which can shock the root systems. 🥶

🌞🪴 Plant Tip Tuesday: Direct Light VS Indirect Light

Direct light is as just as it sounds! ☀️
Think of it as where the sun will be during the hottest parts of the day. When a plant needs bright direct or high light, what it means is that it just wants to see as much sun as possible!

Indirect Light🌤️
Now here’s when it can get a bit more confusing. To break it down a little, here’s 3 basic levels of indirect light:
1. Bright indirect light
2. Medium indirect light
3. Low light

🧽When the potting mix is fresh, like when you first get a plant, it will absorb the water like a sponge.

📉But, as it dries out after waterings, the soil/potting mix will start to compact and press together, which decreases the amount of oxygen in it.

💡You can see this start to happen when the water immediately drains through the holes at the bottom of the plant’s pot, or if the water makes a little pool at the top of the soil. Either way, it’s not getting absorbed, which means y

if you’ve been meaning to repot a plant all summer... do it now 🌿

fall in Toronto is basically a two week heads up before winter arrives. and once the days get shorter, the light gets weaker — which is exactly what your plant needs to recover from the stress of being repotted.
