Pothos are leafy vines you can let trail from a shelf, grow in a hanging basket or train onto a support. Start with the light where the plant will live, then choose a leaf colour and a size that leaves room for the vines to grow.
Golden Pothos has yellow splashes on green leaves, Neon brings bright chartreuse foliage, and Marble Queen has creamy marbling. Cebu Blue offers a narrower, blue-green leaf. Our collection also includes Scindapsus, often called Satin Pothos, for a different leaf texture and silver patterning.
How do Golden, Neon, Marble Queen and Cebu Blue pothos differ?
Golden Pothos has green leaves splashed with yellow, Neon has chartreuse foliage, and Marble Queen has creamy marbling. Cebu Blue offers narrower, blue-green leaves. Choose the pattern you enjoy, then check the light at the intended spot; heavily variegated choices suit a bright indirect-light position.
All can develop longer vines, so compare the current fullness and selected size as well as leaf colour. Leave room below a shelf for trailing stems, or plan a support if you want climbing growth. A small starter pot and a fuller hanging display are different starting sizes, not different permanent growth habits.
Can pothos grow in low light?
Pothos can tolerate lower light, but medium to bright indirect light supports fuller growth. Green Jade Pothos is a practical option for a dimmer position; strongly variegated types need more light to look their best. Low light still means some usable daylight or a grow light, and growth will be slower. Keep foliage away from harsh, prolonged direct sun.
When should I water a pothos?
Allow the mix to dry partly between waterings rather than keeping it constantly wet. Check below the surface and water when the upper portion has dried, then let excess water drain away. The timing changes with light, pot size and season, so use the soil condition rather than a fixed calendar. Check the soil before watering a drooping plant: both overly wet roots and dry soil can cause trouble. Use the selected variety’s product care guide to judge how much of the mix should dry before watering.
Should pothos trail or climb?
Either can work. Let vines hang for a cascading display, or provide a trellis or pole for climbing growth. With suitable light and support, climbing plants can develop larger leaves over time; a pole alone does not guarantee mature foliage. Trim long vines if you want a tidier shape, and position the pot where the foliage receives light rather than hiding it on a dark shelf.
Is Satin Pothos the same as Golden Pothos?
No. Golden Pothos is an Epipremnum, while plants such as Satin Pothos Exotica belong to Scindapsus. The common name overlaps, so check the botanical name and individual care details when comparing them. Neither is a pet-friendly choice for animals that chew leaves; see our pet-friendly collection if that is a priority.
