Anthuriums are tropical plants with two very different looks. Classic flamingo flowers such as Anthurium Red and Pink offer glossy leaves and colourful, flower-like spathes. Foliage varieties such as Clarinervium and Forgetii are chosen for their velvet leaves and contrasting veins.
Start with the look you want, then compare light, humidity and eventual leaf size. A flowering Anthurium can bring colour to a bright tabletop, while a foliage specimen may need more space and attention to humidity as it grows. Check the exact variety's care guide before choosing your plant.
Should I choose a flowering Anthurium or a foliage Anthurium?
Choose Anthurium Red or Pink for the classic colourful flamingo-flower display. Choose Clarinervium for thick, dark, heart-shaped leaves with bright veins, or Crystallinum for large, velvety foliage. Foliage types can flower, but their blooms are usually less showy.
Decide whether flowers or leaves are your main attraction, then compare the exact plant’s humidity needs and growing room. Check the selected size and current flowering information rather than assuming every Anthurium arrives with colourful blooms.
Is the colourful part of an Anthurium a flower?
The red, pink or white heart-shaped part is a spathe, a modified leaf surrounding the central spike, called a spadix. The tiny true flowers grow on that spike. This explains the waxy, leaf-like appearance of a flamingo flower. Its display can last for weeks, but new blooms depend on the plant's maturity, light and growing conditions.
Where should I place an Anthurium indoors?
Choose indirect light in a warm room, away from cold drafts and harsh direct sun. Our Red and Pink listings recommend medium light, while Clarinervium recommends bright indirect light and high humidity. Check your variety rather than treating every Anthurium the same. If you choose a foliage type for a dry room, plan how you will maintain its recommended humidity.
How often should I water an Anthurium?
Follow the soil condition in the individual care guide. Our Red, Pink, Clarinervium and Crystallinum listings recommend watering when the soil is about half dry. Other Anthuriums can differ: Veitchii's guide recommends watering when the top quarter is dry. Let excess water drain away and never leave the pot sitting in collected water. Check moisture rather than watering every variety on the same day.
Are Anthuriums safe for pets?
No. Anthuriums contain irritating calcium oxalate crystals and should not be chewed or eaten. Keep them away from pets and young children, and avoid contact with the sap when pruning. If you need a different choice for a shared space, browse our pet friendly plants and check the exact plant's details.
