Philodendrons offer more than one kind of tropical foliage: trailing heart-shaped leaves, upright clusters, long silver leaves and colourful variegation. For cascading greenery, compare Heartleaf with the lime-striped Brasil. For a bolder colour contrast, Pink Princess has pink patches on dark foliage, while Prince of Orange produces orange new leaves that mature to green.
Choose the growth habit before deciding where to display it. Vines can trail from a shelf or climb a support, while upright types make a fuller tabletop or floor display. Silver Sword is a climbing option with blue-green foliage. Check the individual variety and selected pot size: a small plant may need considerably more room as it grows.
Which Philodendron should I choose for a shelf or tabletop?
For stems that trail over a shelf edge, start with Heartleaf or the lime-striped Brasil. Micans offers a similar cascading display with velvety foliage. Leave space below the pot for the vines to grow.
For an upright tabletop display without long trailing stems, compare Prince of Orange and Birkin. Their leaves still need room to spread. Choose the growth habit first, then check the individual light requirements and selected size; a colourful collector variety is not automatically suited to the same spot as Heartleaf.
Which Philodendrons need climbing support?
Silver Sword and Pink Princess are climbers: plan for a support and space above the pot as their stems lengthen. Heartleaf types can climb too, or trail from a shelf. Upright varieties such as Prince of Orange and Birkin do not need a climbing pole.
Gloriosum is different again: its stem crawls along the surface of the potting mix. Give it horizontal growing room rather than choosing it for a narrow vertical display. Check the listing for whether a support is included with your selected plant.
How much light does a Philodendron need?
Bright, indirect light is a useful starting point for most choices in this collection. Heartleaf can tolerate a shadier position, but do not assume every coloured or variegated variety will grow well in a dark corner. Protect foliage from harsh direct sun and check the individual product’s care guidance before choosing its spot.
How often should I water a Philodendron?
Check the potting mix rather than following a fixed schedule. Let the upper layer dry between waterings, then water thoroughly and drain the excess. The variety, pot size, light and season affect how quickly it dries, so use the individual care guide to refine that routine. Avoid leaving the nursery pot standing in water inside a decorative planter.
Are Philodendrons safe for cats and dogs?
No. Philodendrons are not pet-friendly plants; chewing their foliage can cause mouth irritation and other symptoms from calcium oxalate crystals. Keep their leaves and trailing stems out of pets’ reach. If your pet tends to nibble plants, browse our pet-friendly collection for alternatives.
