Dracaenas are foliage plants with upright stems and leaves ranging from narrow, arching blades to dense tufts and broad stripes. They offer a tree-like shape without a wide canopy, with smaller specimens also suited to tables and desks.
Compare the plant's overall height and shape as well as its leaf colour. Marginata has a lighter, more open outline, Compacta has tightly grouped foliage, and Lemon Lime adds bright stripes. Allow room for growth and choose a spot with natural light or a suitable grow light.
Which Dracaena variety should I choose?
Choose Marginata for slender stems and narrow leaves, JC Compacta for dense dark-green tufts, or Lemon Lime for colourful stripes. Lucky Bamboo is also a Dracaena, with a different cane-like display. Compare the size and form of the actual product; a compact leaf arrangement does not mean the plant will never grow taller.
Can Dracaena grow in low light?
Many Dracaenas tolerate lower light, but bright indirect light generally supports stronger growth and better colour. Low light does not mean a windowless room. Protect a plant accustomed to indoor conditions from sudden strong sun, and expect it to use water more slowly in a dimmer position.
When should I water a Dracaena?
Let the mix dry partly between thorough waterings and check below the surface first. Many cane varieties here prefer the soil relatively dry, while the soil-grown Lucky Bamboo has guidance to water when the top half dries. Follow your chosen product's care notes, use a pot with drainage, and empty collected water rather than following a fixed weekly schedule.
Why does a Dracaena get brown leaf tips?
Brown tips can have several causes, including prolonged dryness, dry air and sensitivity to minerals or fluoride in water. Check soil moisture and watering habits before adding more water. If water quality seems involved, consider distilled or suitable low-mineral water. Existing brown tissue will not turn green again, so watch the new growth.
Are Dracaenas safe for cats and dogs?
No. Dracaenas are toxic to cats and dogs if eaten and can cause vomiting, drooling and other symptoms. Keep them out of reach of pets that chew plants and contact a veterinarian if ingestion is suspected. Our pet-friendly collection offers alternatives to consider.
