Dracaena Tornado, botanically known as Dracaena fragrans ‘Tornado’, is a compact, slow growing Dracaena prized for its unusual twisting foliage and architectural shape. Its glossy, dark green leaves are edged in bright lime to yellow green and curl tightly around the central stem, forming a spiraling rosette that gives the plant its tornado like appearance. Young plants stay low and rounded, while older specimens gradually develop a taller central cane topped with their characteristic whirl of foliage. Compared with similar lime edged Dracaenas such as ‘Dorado’, ‘Tornado’ is distinguished by its much more pronounced twisting and spiral arrangement, making it an especially sculptural choice for shelves, desks, and smaller indoor spaces.

What to expect

The plant comes with a default nursery pot. The nursery pot is usually 0.5" - 1" smaller than stated to fit into the same size decorative pot. Washable Paper Planter Bags are sold separately.

All of our plants are delivered by our human plant expert in person. We will send you a delivery confirmation once your delivery is scheduled. And you'll also get a text message with a tracking link when your plants are out for delivery and on arrival.

All Provinces

All of our 7" and smaller size plants and planters are now available to ship in a box across all provinces in Canada: Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, and Saskatchewan.**

We post our mails on Mondays(or Tuesday if Monday is a holiday) using mixed carriers(Canada Post/UPS/FedEx), the cut off time is Saturday midnight, order placed after that will ship out on the Monday after, so please keep that in mind when you place your order. We do this to avoid the order sitting in a post office over the weekend, however, this may still happen from time to time. To prepare an order, we pack up the plants with great care, ensuring as much as possible that they will have a secure and smooth delivery. Once you receive your tracking link from Canada Post/UPS/FedEx, the delivery will all be based on their projected timelines.

Delivery Standards for Remote Areas

If the destination postal code is located in a remote area, and only Canada Post service the area(alternative options will shown at checkout if available), they may add up to 5 business days, in addition to the posted delivery time. Complimentary heat packs and insulations are included to protect your plants from cold damage if shipped in a box, if weather requires. Some stresses are expected, but with good light and proper watering, they will bounce back very soon.

Pro tips

Dracaena Tornado is relatively easy going, but its foliage can be sensitive to fluoride and accumulated salts in tap water, which may show up as crispy brown tips or margins. If this becomes a recurring problem, try filtered, distilled, or rainwater and occasionally flush the pot thoroughly to remove excess salts. Use a well draining indoor potting mix and avoid keeping the roots constantly wet. Its tightly spiraled leaves naturally form a dense rosette, so rotate the plant occasionally if one side receives significantly more light than the other. As the plant matures, it may slowly develop a visible cane beneath the rosette, this is normal and part of its transition from a compact tabletop plant into a more upright specimen.

How to take care of Dracaena Tornado

Sun: Indirect

Dracaena Tornado should not be in a position to see the sun directly, although early morning or late evening sun is fine. Filtered sunlight through a sheer curtain is best and most homes are comprised primarily of indirect sunlight. The best spot for them is where they do not see the sun during the majority of the day but still get bright, indirect light.

Light: Medium - Low

Dracaena Tornado will thrive in medium to bright light, but also can tolerate low light. A good medium-light place in your home would be in the middle of a room that has a regular size window. They can be placed almost anywhere in the room but remember, plants will grow based on how much light they receive.

Water: When mostly dry

Dracaena Tornado likes the soil to be relatively dry before the next watering. That usually takes about 2 weeks in an average home environment. It will vary depending on the time of year, your environment and lighting conditions, but for them, it's always safer to underwater or water when you see signs of lack of water (i.e. droopy, floppy, or soft leaves). Expect to water more often in brighter light and less often in lower light.

Humidity: Medium

Dracaena Tornado will do well in average humidity environments but will appreciate a little bit of humidity if provided, give them a mist daily or get a humidifier.

Pet Caution

Dracaena Tornado is moderately toxic and can cause some adverse reactions when ingested so it is best to not let your pets eat it, which we advise for all plants in general. The severity of the reaction will depend on how much of the plant is ingested but, if you know your pet typically does not eat your plants, this plant will be suitable for your home.
