Snake plants, often sold as Sansevieria, have firm, water-storing leaves and suit a routine with time to dry between waterings. Their shapes range from tall, upright swords to broad paddles and compact rosettes, so start with the space you want to fill.
Choose Laurentii for yellow-edged leaves, Zeylanica for green banding, or Whale Fin for broad foliage. Golden Hahnii offers a shorter rosette, while Starfish has a spreading fan of cylindrical leaves. Check the individual plant's listed size before choosing a shelf, tabletop or floor position.
Which snake plant should I choose for a desk or floor?
For a shorter tabletop display, compare the compact rosette of Golden Hahnii. For taller, upright leaves, look at Laurentii or Zeylanica in a size suited to your floor space. Whale Fin offers broad, paddle-shaped foliage, while Starfish spreads into a fan of cylindrical leaves.
Check the offered plant dimensions, not just the pot diameter. A small pot of a tall-growing type will not stay desk-sized, and a fan or broad leaf needs more sideways room than a narrow upright display.
Can snake plants grow in low light?
Snake plants tolerate lower light, but brighter indirect light supports better growth. Low light does not mean a room without daylight or a grow light. In a dimmer position, expect slower growth and soil that takes longer to dry. Introduce stronger direct sun gradually rather than moving a plant straight into a hot window.
How often should I water a snake plant?
Let the potting mix dry throughout before watering again, then water and allow excess to drain away. Check the soil rather than following a weekly schedule: pot size, light and season change how quickly it dries. A pot with drainage and a freely draining mix help prevent water from lingering around the roots. Empty any water collected in the outer pot or saucer.
Are Sansevieria and Dracaena the same plant?
Snake plants were traditionally classified as Sansevieria and are now included in Dracaena. Both names still appear in shops and care guides; the familiar snake plant Sansevieria trifasciata is also called Dracaena trifasciata. Dracaena includes other plants too, so check the full variety name and care details when comparing plants.
Are snake plants pet-friendly?
Snake plants are not a pet-friendly choice for cats or dogs that chew plants. Keep them out of reach, or browse our pet-friendly plants for alternatives and check the individual plant's identity before buying.
