Syngoniums, also called arrowhead plants or arrowhead vines, bring pointed leaves and shades of green, cream and pink to an indoor collection. Choose White Butterfly for creamy markings on green leaves, Milk Confetti for pale green foliage flecked with pink, or Neon for a softer pink display.
Think about how you want the plant to grow as well as its colour. A young Syngonium can sit neatly on a table, while longer stems can trail from a shelf or climb a support. Give it bright, indirect light and room to develop; choose a compact variety if space is limited, and check the product’s pot size before ordering.
Which Syngonium suits a small tabletop or a climbing display?
For pink foliage, compare Neon with the pink-speckled Milk Confetti. White Butterfly offers a softer cream-and-green pattern, while Albo Variegatum has more distinct white and green patches. For a small space, consider the dwarf Pixie. Patterns vary naturally between plants and leaves, so choose the overall look you enjoy rather than expecting every leaf to match a photograph.
Pixie is the compact choice to compare when space is limited. Other young Syngoniums may start as tidy tabletop plants but develop longer stems; decide whether you can accommodate trailing growth, provide a support or prune as needed. Check the offered size as well as the cultivar.
Does an arrowhead plant need a moss pole?
No. A support is useful if you want a climbing plant, but you can also let longer stems trail or prune them to maintain a bushier shape. Many Syngoniums start compact and develop longer vines as they mature. A small nursery pot does not mean the plant will stay that size, and mature climbing growth can produce leaves with a different shape.
How much light does a Syngonium need?
Bright, indirect light is a good starting point. Choose a position near a bright window, protected from strong direct sun that can scorch the leaves. A dim corner is a poor choice for strong growth, especially when you are choosing the plant for its coloured or variegated foliage.
How often should I water an arrowhead plant?
Check the potting mix instead of watering on a fixed weekly schedule. Aim for lightly moist roots without leaving the pot saturated, and avoid letting the entire root ball stay dry for long periods. Use a pot with drainage and empty collected water from the saucer or decorative pot. Light, pot size and season all change how quickly the mix dries.
Are Syngonium plants safe for cats and dogs?
Arrowhead plants are not a pet-friendly choice. Syngonium podophyllum contains insoluble calcium oxalates that can irritate the mouth if chewed. Keep plants away from pets that nibble foliage, or explore our pet-friendly plants for alternatives.
