The standard ZZ has glossy green foliage; Raven develops near-black mature leaves. Zenzi has closely spaced, curled leaflets and a more compact habit. Choose a variegated ZZ for cream or yellow markings, allowing for natural differences in the pattern rather than expecting every leaf to match the photo.

For a desk or narrow tabletop, start by comparing Zenzi’s compact form with the selected size of standard ZZ or Raven. A smaller pot of standard ZZ is a younger plant, not the same as a compact cultivar. Leave room for new upright stems and choose by the display you want as well as leaf colour.

A ZZ can tolerate lower light, but it usually grows better in bright indirect light. A room with no useful daylight needs a suitable grow light; low-light tolerance is not the same as needing no light. Avoid suddenly exposing an indoor-grown plant to harsh direct sun. Give variegated plants a bright indirect position rather than the darkest corner.

Let the potting mix dry before watering again, then water thoroughly and allow excess to drain. The water-storing rhizomes make frequent watering unnecessary. Check deeper into the pot rather than judging only the surface, and expect longer drying times in low light. Yellowing leaves with persistently wet soil can be a sign of overwatering.
