Dieffenbachias, often called dumb cane, are upright tropical houseplants grown for broad leaves patterned in green, cream and yellow. Choose from the pale streaks of Tropic Snow, the speckled greens of Camouflage or the darker, mottled leaves of Reflector.
Match the current plant size to your space, with room for the leaves to spread as it grows. Bright, indirect light and a pot that drains well are a good starting point. Before buying, consider placement carefully: Dieffenbachia is not a pet-friendly choice, and its sap can irritate skin and mouths.
How do the Dieffenbachia varieties differ?
Tropic Snow has creamy-green leaves with pale central streaks and darker margins. Camouflage combines bright green with darker patches, while Reflector has a deeper green background and contrasting flecks. Tropic Marianne has broad creamy centres, and Sterling offers a simpler dark-green leaf with a pale central vein. Compare the photos, listed dimensions and available pot sizes to choose your preferred look.
Will a Dieffenbachia stay small enough for a tabletop?
A small nursery pot describes the plant you are buying, not its permanent size. Dieffenbachias grow upright stems and can become substantial floor plants. Compare the selected height and leaf spread of Tropic Snow, Camouflage and Reflector rather than treating different leaf patterns as a reliable guide to mature size.
Choose a smaller specimen for a tabletop only if you can allow for new growth or move it later. Lower leaves can fall naturally as the cane grows, and occasional pruning can help maintain a fuller shape. Wear gloves when cutting because the sap is irritating, and keep these plants away from pets and children who may chew them.
Can Dieffenbachia grow in low light?
It can tolerate lower light, but growth is generally better in bright, indirect light. Place it near useful daylight with strong direct sun filtered, rather than in a dark corner. Rotate the pot occasionally for more even growth and keep it away from cold draughts. In a dimmer spot, the mix usually dries more slowly, so check it before watering.
How often should I water a Dieffenbachia?
Check the potting mix and water when the surface has dried, then let excess water drain away. Keep the root zone moderately moist without leaving the pot standing in water. The interval changes with light, season and pot size, so avoid a fixed weekly rule. Drooping or yellow leaves can have several causes; check whether the mix is wet or dry before adding more water.
Is Dieffenbachia safe around pets and children?
Dieffenbachia is toxic to cats and dogs if chewed, and its irritating sap also makes it unsuitable within reach of young children. Keep it away from curious mouths and use gloves when pruning or handling damaged stems. If accessible placement is unavoidable, compare our pet-friendly plants instead. Contact a veterinarian promptly if you suspect a pet has eaten it.
