Caladiums are grown for their delicate, colourful leaves, with patterns ranging from pink and red veins to almost-white centres and green borders. They make a striking focal point in a warm, bright room without relying on flowers for colour.
Compare the leaf colours you like, then consider the seasonal care. Many Caladiums rest after a period of growth and can lose their leaves, even indoors. Choose one for its changing display, with a warm spot and regular attention to watering during active growth.
Which Caladium should I choose for pink, white or red leaves?
For pink, compare Carolyn Whorton, with red veins and green edging, with Pink Splash, which has contrasting dark green veins. White Moonlight gives a paler look with a fine green border, while Red Flash combines dark red, pink spots and broad green margins.
Are Caladiums indoor or outdoor plants?
They can grow indoors in bright indirect light, or outdoors during warm weather in a suitable sheltered position. In Toronto, treat outdoor Caladiums as seasonal plants and bring them inside before cold weather. Sun tolerance varies by cultivar; do not move an indoor plant straight into strong sun. A shaded garden can still be much brighter than a dim room.
How often should I water a Caladium?
During active growth, keep the mix lightly moist with good drainage. For the colourful Caladium varieties here, check when the top quarter of the soil has dried, then water and let excess drain away. Avoid leaving the pot standing in water or allowing the whole root ball to become bone dry while it is in leaf. Follow the individual product's care guidance and reduce watering as growth slows.
Is my Caladium dying when its leaves disappear?
Gradual leaf loss after a growing season can be normal dormancy. Reduce watering as the foliage dies back, then let the leafless plant rest dry in a warm, frost-free place. Resume watering when new growth starts. Sudden collapse or a soft, rotting base needs a closer check; do not assume every yellow leaf means dormancy.
Are Caladiums safe for cats and dogs?
No. Caladiums contain insoluble calcium oxalates and are toxic to cats and dogs if chewed. Keep them away from pets and young children, and contact your veterinarian if you suspect ingestion. If pet safety guides your choice, explore our pet-friendly collection.
