Air plants offer a different way to bring greenery into your home: silvery rosettes, curling leaves and hanging strands that can be displayed without a conventional planter. Most Tillandsias in this collection absorb water through their leaves and use their roots mainly to hold on to a support.
Start with the shape and display you want, then choose an individual plant, an assorted mystery pack or a set with a holder. Plan for bright, filtered light and a spot where the plant can dry after watering. Soil-free growing still needs regular care, and the potted Pink Quill has a different routine.
Which air plant should I choose for my display?
Xerographica forms a broad rosette of silvery curls, while Spanish Moss hangs in fine strands. Caput Medusae has a bulbous base and twisting leaves; Curly Slim has longer, slender curls; Melanocrater has a spiky outline. Compare the listed dimensions with your shelf or holder, and check each product for current size options and availability.
What is included with an air plant, mystery pack or display set?
Check the selected product option: an individual air plant does not automatically include a holder. The Air Plant Mystery Box contains an assortment selected by us; choose its pack option rather than expecting a particular pictured variety.
For a plant with a display, compare Air Plant with Holder. The Air Plant Trio includes three assorted plants and three concrete bases. Read the current listing for exact contents, size and colour options, and choose a display that lets you remove or reach the plants for watering and drying.
Do all the plants in this collection grow without soil?
Most of the air plants here are intended for an open holder or support without soil. Pink Quill, sold as Tillandsia cyanea and also known as Wallisia cyanea, is the exception: it arrives in a nursery pot and is grown in potting mix. Keep it potted and care for the mix; do not remove it and treat it like a loose Xerographica or mystery-pack air plant.
How do I water an air plant?
Water the leaves with room-temperature water, using a thorough rinse, dunk or soak suited to the variety. Greener types generally need more moisture than silvery plants from drier habitats, so one soaking time or weekly schedule will not fit every plant. After watering, gently shake out trapped water and let the plant dry upside down with good airflow before returning it to its holder. Pay particular attention to dense rosettes and bulbous bases, where water can collect. Occasional light misting alone may not meet its needs in a dry home.
Where should I keep air plants, and can they live in glass?
Choose bright, indirect light and good air circulation. An open glass display can work if you can remove the plant for watering and let it dry completely before putting it back. Avoid sealed containers, standing water and a base that stays damp. Keep displays away from hot direct sun through glass and cold draughts; an attractive shelf still needs enough light for a living plant.
