String of plants are named for the small, distinctive leaves along their trailing stems: hearts, pearls, turtles, dolphins and more. They are a way to add a cascade of greenery to a shelf or hanging planter, with leaf shapes and colours to suit different displays.
Choose the look you enjoy, then match the plant to your light and watering habits. This collection brings together several botanical groups, so similar trailing shapes do not mean identical care. Leave space for the vines and make sure light reaches the top of the pot as well as the hanging stems.
Which String of plant matches the look I want?
String of Hearts has flat, silver-patterned hearts on fine vines; Variegata adds cream and pink, while Silver Glory offers a more silvery look. String of Pearls has round bead-like leaves, and Dolphins has curved leaves shaped like little dolphins. String of Turtles has small, patterned discs, while Nickels has flatter coin-like leaves. Spades, Arrows and Needles offer other slender trailing shapes. Check the listing for current dimensions and availability.
Are all String of plants related?
No. String of is a descriptive common name, not a plant family. Hearts and several of its relatives are Ceropegia, Pearls and Dolphins are Curio types often sold under the older name Senecio, Turtles is a Peperomia, and Nickels is a Dischidia. Use the named plant and its care requirements when choosing, rather than assuming they all need the same conditions.
How much light do trailing String of plants need?
Hearts and Pearls need a bright position to grow well; Turtles prefers bright, indirect light with protection from harsh sun. A high shelf is useful only if daylight reaches the plant. If vines become stretched with wide gaps between leaves, reassess the light. Keep the top of the pot well lit to support fuller growth there, and introduce stronger sun gradually rather than moving a shaded plant straight into intense sunlight.
How do String of Hearts, Pearls and Turtles differ in watering needs?
Check each pot separately. String of Hearts and String of Pearls need time for the mix to dry between thorough waterings. String of Turtles is a Peperomia from a wetter tropical habitat and benefits from more even moisture, while still needing an airy mix that does not stay soggy.
Follow the named plant’s care guide for String of Nickels and other types. Choose a trailing plant whose moisture needs fit your routine, rather than watering the whole collection together. Pot size, season and light change drying time even between two pots of the same plant.
Are String of plants pet friendly?
The collection is mixed, so do not assume every String of plant is pet friendly. String of Pearls can be harmful if eaten, and trailing stems can be tempting to pets even when the pot is high up. Check the identity and suitability of the individual plant, keep vines away from chewing pets, and browse our pet-friendly collection when that is a priority.
