Cactus plants range from rounded, spiny forms and upright columns to the trailing stems of forest cacti. Golden Barrel and Fairy Castle suit a sunny display, while Fishbone, Orchid and Holiday Cactus offer a different look for bright, filtered light.
Start with the light beside your window, then compare the space each plant will need as it grows. Desert and forest cacti need different watering routines, so choose a variety that fits your home rather than treating every cactus as a plant that rarely needs water.
Should I choose a desert cactus or a forest cactus for indoors?
For a sunny windowsill, compare the rounded Golden Barrel with the branching, upright Fairy Castle. Leave room around the spines and for future growth.
For a trailing display in bright, filtered light, consider a forest cactus such as Fishbone or Holiday Cactus. Forest and desert types need different watering routines, so choose for your light and care setup before deciding on shape. Check the selected size; a small starter pot does not make every cactus permanently miniature.
Do all cactus plants need direct sunlight?
No. Many desert cacti need a sunny window, but forest cacti such as Orchid, Holiday and Rhipsalis prefer bright, filtered light and protection from harsh sun. A dim corner is not a good substitute for that filtered light. Match the variety to your window and introduce stronger sunlight gradually.
How often should I water a cactus?
Check the potting mix rather than following a fixed weekly schedule. Desert cacti need the mix to dry between waterings and generally use less water when growth slows. Forest cacti need more regular moisture during active growth and should not be left dry for long periods. Water thoroughly when needed, let excess water drain, and never leave the pot standing in water.
Are cacti suitable around children and pets?
Choose the placement carefully. Spines can injure curious hands or paws, and Bunny Ear Cactus has tiny barbed bristles called glochids that detach easily despite its soft appearance. Keep prickly plants out of reach and avoid touching them with bare hands. A nearly spineless appearance does not guarantee a plant is safe to handle or chew; check the exact species when pet safety matters.
Can cactus plants stay outdoors in a Canadian winter?
Most indoor cacti in this collection need protection from freezing temperatures. Eastern Prickly Pear Cactus is a cold-hardy exception, but suitability still depends on your local climate and very good drainage. Do not assume other prickly pears share its hardiness. For a summer outdoor display, introduce plants gradually to outdoor light and bring tender varieties inside before cold weather.
