Astrophytum Myriostigma var. Nudum

Introducing the Astrophytum myriostigma var. nudum, a beautifully minimalist cactus that celebrates simplicity, authenticity, and the confidence to stand without decoration. With its smooth, spineless body and clean star-shaped geometry, it symbolizes natural clarity — a reminder that sometimes removing the extras allows the true form to shine.

Also known as the Nude Bishop’s Cap or “Hekiran” in Japanese cultivation, Astrophytum myriostigma var. nudum closely resembles the classic Bishop’s Cap but differs in one striking way: it lacks, or nearly lacks, the familiar white woolly flecks that typically cover the species. The varietal name nudum means “naked” or “unclothed,” referring directly to this smooth, exposed surface.

Without the dense white scales, the natural colour of the stem becomes the star. Depending on the individual clone and growing conditions, plants may appear bright green, blue-green, grey-green, or even softly mauve-green, giving each specimen its own subtle personality.

Its spineless body retains the beautifully geometric form that makes Astrophytum myriostigma so collectible, typically beginning with broad ribs arranged into a star-like silhouette when viewed from above. As it slowly matures, the plant may become more elongated while maintaining its clean, architectural character.

Astrophytum myriostigma var. nudum thrives in bright light with excellent drainage and restrained watering. Allow the soil to dry thoroughly between waterings, and keep it considerably drier during cooler months. Its slow-growing nature rewards patience with increasingly sculptural form and rich natural coloration.

Welcome the Astrophytum myriostigma var. nudum into your collection, and let it inspire you with its symbolism of simplicity, authenticity, and quiet confidence. It’s not just a plant; it’s a reminder that sometimes we are most beautiful when nothing hides who we truly are.
