Myrtillocactus Geometrizans Cristata, botanically known as Myrtillocactus geometrizans f. cristatus, commonly known as the Dinosaur Back Cactus, is a fascinating crested mutation of the classic Blue Candle Cactus prized for its sculptural, architectural growth. Instead of forming typical upright columns, its blue green, waxy stems spread sideways into tightly folded, fan shaped crests that ripple and overlap as the plant matures. Over time, these twisting waves can develop above a thick columnar base, creating a dramatic living sculpture that makes every specimen completely unique.

🌵these are all technically the same plant.

🤠every single one is solving the exact same problem — how to survive almost no water, brutal heat, and nowhere to hide. but instead of landing on one answer, they evolved into thousands of them.

most cacti actually grow way slower than people expect. a golden barrel can take years to grow just a few inches. so if yours looks the same as last summer, it’s probably fine. it’s just being a cactus.

Pro tips

The unusual fan shape of Myrtillocactus Geometrizans Cristata comes from crested growth, where the growing point expands laterally instead of producing a normal cylindrical stem. Give it strong light and a gritty, fast-draining cactus mix to maintain sturdy, compact growth, and always use a container with a drainage hole. If ordinary columnar shoots begin growing from the plant, they can be removed so the faster-growing normal stems do not take energy away from the distinctive crest. Avoid allowing water to remain around the folds of the crest, especially in cooler conditions. Repot only when needed, and handle the plant carefully to avoid damaging its waxy blue coating and short spines.
