Elephant ear is a common name shared by several tropical plant groups, including Alocasia, Colocasia and Xanthosoma. This collection brings them together so you can compare compact, textured leaves with much larger foliage and colours ranging from silver and deep green to chartreuse.
Start with the space the plant will need as it grows. A small pot does not always mean a compact adult plant. Compare the variety, selected size and care guide, and decide whether you want a tabletop plant, a larger indoor feature or a seasonal patio display.
Should I choose Alocasia, Colocasia or another elephant ear?
Elephant ear is a shared common name, not one care routine. For compact, textured indoor foliage, compare the jewel varieties in our Alocasia collection. Other Alocasias become much larger, so check the exact variety.
Colocasia offers broad foliage for a warm, bright space or seasonal patio container with room to spread and regular attention to moisture. Xanthosoma adds other bold foliage forms. Choose the plant whose light, watering and winter needs you can provide; do not apply compact Alocasia care to every plant sold as an elephant ear.
How much light and water do elephant ears need?
Bright, indirect light is a useful starting point for many indoor Alocasia. Larger seasonal varieties may tolerate more sun after gradual adjustment. Water needs also vary: Tropical Storm prefers more consistent moisture than many smaller Alocasia. Use a draining pot, check the growing medium regularly, and follow the specific plant’s guide instead of keeping every elephant ear standing in water.
Can I grow elephant ears outside in Canada?
Many can spend the warm season outdoors after frost risk has passed, with gradual adjustment to outdoor light and protection from strong wind. Plan winter care before buying: these tropical plants generally need frost protection. Some can continue indoors in a warm, bright space; storage of dormant corms depends on the type. Reduce watering when growth slows rather than keeping a summer schedule.
Are elephant ear plants pet friendly?
No. The Alocasia, Colocasia and Xanthosoma sold as elephant ears should be kept away from pets and children who may chew plants. Their tissues contain irritating calcium oxalate crystals. Treat these plants as ornamental and avoid sap contact when handling or trimming them. Browse our pet-friendly plants for more options.
