Croton houseplants, commonly sold as Codiaeum variegatum, bring yellow, orange, red and green into a display through their foliage. Petra has broad leaves with bold veins, Oakleaf has a lobed outline, and Picasso’s Paintbrush has fine, ribbon-like leaves. Batik and Banana offer further variations in pattern and shape.
Choose the look you enjoy, then give it a warm, bright position with steady care. Crotons show their colour best with enough light, and their leaves can change as they mature. A sheltered patio can work in warm weather, but these tropical plants need protection from cold and sudden changes.
How do Petra, Oakleaf and Picasso’s Paintbrush differ?
Petra offers broad leaves and prominent colourful veins. Oakleaf has distinct lobes, while Picasso’s Paintbrush has very narrow foliage for a finer texture. Batik adds patterned, pointed leaves, and Banana has slender leaves with yellow markings. Compare the current photographs and sizes rather than choosing by colour alone.
How much light does a Croton need to keep its colour?
Give it a bright position near a window. Strong filtered light suits indoor growing, and some gentle direct sun can be useful after gradual acclimation. Low light can produce greener growth, but suddenly moving a plant into harsh sun can scorch it. Colour also varies with the cultivar and leaf age, so not every new leaf will immediately match a mature one.
When should I water my Croton?
Check the upper layer of soil and water when it begins to dry, keeping the root ball from becoming completely dry. Water thoroughly and let the excess drain away. Crotons need more regular moisture than desert succulents, but constantly soggy soil is also a problem. Adjust to your pot, light and season instead of following a fixed number of days.
Why is my Croton dropping leaves after I bring it home?
A change in light, temperature or location can trigger leaf drop. Check for dry or overly wet soil, cold drafts and pests as well, rather than assuming every dropped leaf is just adjustment. Give the plant a stable bright position away from vents, and avoid repeatedly moving it or adding water when the mix is already wet. Persistent decline needs a closer care check.
Are Crotons suitable for homes with pets?
Crotons are not a pet-friendly choice for animals that chew plants. Keep them out of reach of cats, dogs and young children. Their sap can also irritate skin, so wear gloves when pruning and wash your hands afterwards. If you need an alternative, explore our pet-friendly collection.
