Rhaphidophora are tropical climbing plants with very different leaf shapes. Tetrasperma offers the familiar split-leaf look, Decursiva develops more deeply divided foliage as it matures, and Shingle Plant grows with its leaves pressed against a support.
Choose the growth habit you want to display, then plan the support and space around it. These are growing vines, so a small nursery pot does not mean a permanently small plant. Medium to bright indirect light and a draining pot provide a useful starting point.
Which Rhaphidophora should I choose?
Choose Tetrasperma for smaller split leaves on a climbing vine. Compare Decursiva for foliage that becomes more deeply divided as the plant matures, or Variegated Decursiva for cream and green patterning. Shingle Plant, Rhaphidophora hayi, is the choice for an overlapping, flat-leaf display against a board or similar support.
Is Mini Monstera actually a Monstera?
Mini Monstera is a common name for Rhaphidophora tetrasperma. It belongs to a different genus from Monstera, although both are aroids. The nickname describes its smaller split leaves, not a dwarf Monstera deliciosa or a promise that the vine will stay small.
What support does a Rhaphidophora need?
Tetrasperma and Decursiva can be trained onto a sturdy pole or trellis as their vines lengthen. Shingle Plant needs a surface its aerial roots can grip and its leaves can lie against; a porous board or suitable broad support suits that habit. Plan to extend or replace the support as the plant reaches the top, and keep vines away from finishes you do not want roots attaching to.
Should I water all Rhaphidophora the same way?
No. The Tetrasperma and Decursiva products here are listed for watering after the upper half of the mix dries, while Shingle Plant is listed for watering when the top quarter dries. Check the actual pot before watering, use a freely draining mix and empty collected water from the cover pot. Light, temperature and pot size change how quickly each plant dries.
Are Rhaphidophora pet-friendly?
These plants are listed with pet caution and should be kept away from pets and young children who may chew them. Rhaphidophora tetrasperma contains irritating calcium oxalate crystals. A climbing support can help organize the plant, but it does not make accessible leaves safe to chew. Browse our pet-friendly plants for more options.
