Variant

Alocasia Ninja Variegated, also known as Alocasia ‘Black Velvet Ninja’ Albo Variegated, or Alocasia reginula ‘Black Ninja’ Albo Variegata, is a rare jewel Alocasia prized for its dramatic contrast and compact growth. Its thick, velvety leaves emerge deep green to nearly black, highlighted by bright silver veins and crisp cream-to-white variegation that appears in unpredictable splashes, marbling, and bold sectors. The Ninja form is especially admired for its rounded foliage and distinctive pale marginal veining compare to the regular Alocasia Black Velvet, while some variegated areas may develop delicate pink tones under strong grow lights, making every new leaf a surprise.

What to expect

The plant comes with a default nursery pot. The nursery pot is usually 0.5" - 1" smaller than stated to fit into the same size decorative pot. Washable Paper Planter Bags are sold separately.

As with all living things, no two plants are alike. There is some natural variation in size, shape, and characteristics. We make every effort to bring you a plant that as closely as possible matches the plant as it appears on our website, in the size you have chosen, and have a good potential to happily grow in your home.

Pro tips

Alocasia Ninja Variegated grows best with consistency, warm temperatures, bright indirect light, high humidity, and evenly managed moisture will help it produce its best foliage. The white variegated areas are more delicate than the dark green portions, so avoid harsh direct sun and sudden changes in light that can cause scorching. Use a chunky, airy aroid mix that holds some moisture while allowing plenty of oxygen around the roots, and never let the plant sit in standing water. Keep the leaves dry when possible and provide good airflow, as the thick, velvety foliage can be sensitive to prolonged surface moisture. Variegation can vary dramatically from leaf to leaf and may occasionally increase or decrease, so judge the plant over several new leaves rather than a single growth. Feed lightly during active growth, as heavy fertilization can damage its sensitive roots.

Care Guide

How to take care of Alocasia Ninja Variegated

Sun: Indirect

Alocasia Ninja Variegated should not be in a position to see the sun directly, although early morning or late evening sun is fine. Filtered sunlight through a sheer curtain is best and most homes are comprised primarily of indirect sunlight. The best spot for them is where they do not see the sun during the majority of the day but still get bright, indirect light.

Light: Medium - Bright

Alocasia Ninja Variegated will thrive in bright light, but also can tolerate medium light. A good medium-light place in your home would be in the middle of a room that has a regular size window. They can be placed anywhere between the middle of the room and the window. Remember that plants will grow based on how much light they receive.

Water: When half dry

Alocasia Ninja Variegated needs to be watered when the top half of the soil is dry to the touch. That usually takes about 1 week in an average home environment. It will vary depending on the time of year, your environment and lighting conditions, but it's always safer to underwater or give the soil a check before you water again. Expect to water more often in brighter light and less often in lower light.

Humidity: High

Alocasia Ninja Variegated likes a high humidity environment, give them a mist daily or as often as possible. Alternatively, you can put them around a humidifier. Although they won't die if they don't receive enough humidity, their leaves may have some dry, crunchy, or yellow edges.

Pet Caution

Alocasia Ninja Variegated is moderately toxic and can cause some adverse reactions when ingested so it is best to not let your pets eat it, which we advise for all plants in general. The severity of the reaction will depend on how much of the plant is ingested but, if you know your pet typically does not eat your plants, this plant will be suitable for your home.

Plant Story

Introducing the Alocasia Ninja Variegated, a rare jewel Alocasia that celebrates contrast, individuality, and the beauty of subtle transformation. With its velvety near-black leaves, silver venation, and unpredictable white variegation, it symbolizes quiet distinction — a reminder that the smallest details can completely change how something is seen.

Often sold as Alocasia ‘Black Velvet Ninja’ Albo Variegated, this unusual form is associated with Alocasia reginula and carries the compact, luxurious look that makes jewel Alocasias so desirable. Compared with standard Black Velvet, the Ninja form is known for its rounder leaves and characteristic pale edging along the margins.

The foliage is thick, matte, and richly textured, ranging from deep green to almost black. Bright silver veins cut sharply across the surface, while creamy white, pale green, and albo variegation may appear as marbling, scattered splashes, or larger irregular sectors.

Under strong grow lights, some of the pale variegated areas can develop soft pink tones, adding another layer of surprise to an already dramatic plant. Because the patterning is unpredictable, each new leaf feels like a reveal, with no two growths expressing colour in exactly the same way.

Alocasia Ninja Variegated thrives in bright, indirect light with warmth, high humidity, and an airy, well-draining soil mix kept lightly moist without becoming soggy. Its compact size makes it especially suited to shelves, cabinets, and curated collector displays where its intricate foliage can be appreciated up close.

Welcome the Alocasia Ninja Variegated into your collection, and let it inspire you with its symbolism of individuality, contrast, and quiet transformation. It’s not just a plant; it’s a reminder that even the darkest canvas can reveal something unexpectedly luminous.
