Variant

Philodendron esmeraldense is a remarkable and relatively rare species within the Philodendron genus, originating from Ecuador. This plant is highly sought after by collectors due to its large, glossy, and elongated heart-shaped leaves, which can reach impressive sizes as the plant matures. The leaves are deep green with pronounced pale green veins, creating a striking contrast. One of the unique characteristics of Philodendron esmeraldense is the way its leaves subtly change shape as the plant ages, often becoming more elongated and developing a deeper sinus (the space between the lobes). This species is a climbing Philodendron, which makes it ideal for growing on a moss pole or other support structures to mimic its natural growth habit in tropical rainforests.

What to expect

The plant comes with a default nursery pot. The nursery pot is usually 0.5" - 1" smaller than stated to fit into the same size decorative pot. Washable Paper Planter Bags are sold separately.

As with all living things, no two plants are alike. There is some natural variation in size, shape, and characteristics. We make every effort to bring you a plant that as closely as possible matches the plant as it appears on our website, in the size you have chosen, and have a good potential to happily grow in your home.

Care Guide

How to take care of Philodendron Esmeraldense

Sun: Indirect

Philodendron Esmeraldense should not be in a position to see the sun directly, although early morning or late evening sun is fine. Filtered sunlight through a sheer curtain is best and most homes are comprised primarily of indirect sunlight. The best spot for them is where they do not see the sun during the majority of the day but still get bright, indirect light.

Light: Bright

Philodendron Esmeraldense will do best in bright light. A nice bright place inside your home would be on the window sill or a stool that is right next to a window, either with or without blinds, depending on if the plant can handle sun. Remember that plants will grow based on how much light they receive.

Water: When half dry

Philodendron Esmeraldense needs to be watered when the top half of the soil is dry to the touch. That usually takes about 1 week in an average home environment. It will vary depending on the time of year, your environment and lighting conditions, but it's always safer to underwater or give the soil a check before you water again. Expect to water more often in brighter light and less often in lower light.

Humidity: High

Philodendron Esmeraldense likes a high humidity environment, give them a mist daily or as often as possible. Alternatively, you can put them around a humidifier. Although they won't die if they don't receive enough humidity, their leaves may have some dry, crunchy, or yellow edges.

Pet Caution

Philodendron Esmeraldense is moderately toxic and can cause some adverse reactions when ingested so it is best to not let your pets eat it, which we advise for all plants in general. The severity of the reaction will depend on how much of the plant is ingested but, if you know your pet typically does not eat your plants, this plant will be suitable for your home.

About Philodendron Esmeraldense

Botanical Name: Philodendron esmeraldense

Common Name: Philodendron Esmeraldense

Origin: Ecuador

Plant Story

Introducing the Philodendron Esmeraldense, a magnificent and somewhat rare houseplant prized for its lush, deep green foliage and imposing presence. This exotic species, native to the rainforests of Ecuador, is a true testament to the serene and enduring beauty of nature, offering a piece of the tropical wilderness to enrich any indoor environment.

The Philodendron Esmeraldense is characterized by its large, glossy leaves which can grow impressively wide. These leaves are elongated and heart-shaped, presenting a striking velvety texture and deep green colour that seems to absorb and reflect the tranquility of a dense, verdant forest. The sheer size and elegant simplicity of its foliage make the Esmeraldense a standout addition, symbolizing growth, abundance, and the nurturing qualities of nature.

To ensure your Philodendron Esmeraldense thrives, provide it with bright, indirect light. This will enhance its vibrant green hues without risking the sunburn that direct sunlight can cause. The plant’s preference for filtered light parallels the canopy-covered conditions of its rainforest home, reminding us to seek environments that best suit our growth.

When it comes to watering, the Esmeraldense prefers consistency, with soil kept moist but never waterlogged. Proper drainage is crucial, as standing water can lead to root rot. This watering practice underscores the importance of balance and care in nurturing—not too little, not too much, but just right.

As your Philodendron Esmeraldense matures, it may also produce aerial roots, seeking stability and nutrients, much like it would in its natural habitat. This behaviour is a fascinating display of adaptability and survival instincts, illustrating the plant’s inherent connection to its environment.

Welcome the Philodendron Esmeraldense into your home or office and let it serve as a daily reminder of resilience, natural beauty, and the importance of creating nurturing spaces. It’s not just a plant; it’s a living piece of art, a dynamic embodiment of tranquility and growth that encourages us to thrive in our own environments.
