Variant

Alocasia Cuprea Red Secret, is a spectacular jewel Alocasia prized for foliage that looks almost too metallic to be real. Its thick, shield shaped leaves have a rigid, deeply sculpted surface that catches the light like hammered copper, shifting between burgundy red, bronze, dark metallic green, and nearly black as the leaves mature. The undersides are rich maroon to plum purple, while deeply sunken veins give each leaf a striking three dimensional appearance. Compared with the standard form Alocasia cuprea ‘Blackie’, Alocasia Cuprea Red Secret shows stronger red and maroon tones in its emerging foliage and is associated with a reddish spathe, while the standard form tends to mature toward a greener metallic finish and produces a greener spathe. This subtle but distinctive difference makes Alocasia Cuprea Red Secret especially desirable among collectors of metallic and jewel Alocasias.

Pro tips

Alocasia Cuprea Red Secret is especially sensitive to extremes in watering, so aim for consistency rather than keeping the soil constantly wet. Grow it in a chunky, well-draining aroid mix that retains some moisture while allowing plenty of air around the roots. Its famous metallic colouring naturally changes as each leaf matures and can look dramatically different depending on lighting and viewing angle, so a greener or bronzier mature leaf does not necessarily mean the plant is losing its ‘Red Secret’ character. Avoid harsh direct sun in an attempt to produce stronger red tones. The deeply textured leaves can collect dust in their ridges, so gently wipe them when necessary rather than using leaf-shine products. Keep an eye out for spider mites and mealybugs, especially in warm, dry indoor conditions.

Care Guide

How to take care of Alocasia Cuprea Red Secret

Sun: Indirect

Alocasia Cuprea Red Secret should not be in a position to see the sun directly, although early morning or late evening sun is fine. Filtered sunlight through a sheer curtain is best and most homes are comprised primarily of indirect sunlight. The best spot for them is where they do not see the sun during the majority of the day but still get bright, indirect light.

Light: Medium - Bright

Alocasia Cuprea Red Secret will thrive in bright light, but also can tolerate medium light. A good medium-light place in your home would be in the middle of a room that has a regular size window. They can be placed anywhere between the middle of the room and the window. Remember that plants will grow based on how much light they receive.

Water: When half dry

Alocasia Cuprea Red Secret needs to be watered when the top half of the soil is dry to the touch. That usually takes about 1 week in an average home environment. It will vary depending on the time of year, your environment and lighting conditions, but it's always safer to underwater or give the soil a check before you water again. Expect to water more often in brighter light and less often in lower light.

Humidity: High

Alocasia Cuprea Red Secret likes a high humidity environment, give them a mist daily or as often as possible. Alternatively, you can put them around a humidifier. Although they won't die if they don't receive enough humidity, their leaves may have some dry, crunchy, or yellow edges.

Pet Caution

Alocasia Cuprea Red Secret is moderately toxic and can cause some adverse reactions when ingested so it is best to not let your pets eat it, which we advise for all plants in general. The severity of the reaction will depend on how much of the plant is ingested but, if you know your pet typically does not eat your plants, this plant will be suitable for your home.

About Alocasia Cuprea Red Secret

Plant Story

Introducing the Alocasia Cuprea Red Secret, a dramatic jewel Alocasia that celebrates intensity, transformation, and the beauty of changing with the light. With its metallic foliage shifting between burgundy, copper, and deep green, it symbolizes hidden depth — a reminder that some things reveal a different character depending on how they are seen.

Known botanically as Alocasia Cuprea Red Secret, this striking cultivar produces stiff, shield-shaped leaves with an almost unreal metallic surface. The texture appears rigid and polished, resembling hammered copper or molded metal, giving the plant such a sculptural quality that its leaves can look almost artificial at first glance.

The upper surface changes dramatically with lighting, moving between deep burgundy-red, maroon, coppery tones, and dark metallic green. Beneath, the leaves reveal a rich plum-purple underside, adding another layer of color and making every angle of the plant feel distinct.

New leaves typically emerge in exceptionally dark red tones before gradually hardening into deeper maroon and metallic green. One botanical feature that distinguishes ‘Red Secret’ from other forms of Alocasia cuprea is its reddish spathe, while the more standard form often produces a greener flower sheath.

Thriving in bright, indirect light with warmth, humidity, and an airy, well-draining aroid mix, ‘Red Secret’ appreciates lightly and consistently moist soil without becoming waterlogged. Gentle filtered light allows its metallic finish and changing coloration to remain the focus.

Welcome the Alocasia Cuprea Red Secret into your collection, and let it inspire you with its symbolism of depth, mystery, and transformation. It’s not just a plant; it’s a reminder that sometimes the most captivating beauty changes every time the light shifts.
